Overview

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum (BBM) is Vancouver’s natural history museum that showcases its biological collections and research in an effort to help spread the understanding of the diversity of life and its importance to our everyday lives. Through collections-based research, education, community programs and special events, the BBM strives to engage and inspire a new generation of researchers to help preserve and protect biodiversity.

The BBM, opened in 2010, is a fairly new museum compared to competitors like Science World and the Vancouver Aquarium that have long served as popular local attractions. Thus, a special photo montage event has been organized to help raise the BBM’s public exposure to people living in Vancouver. This event is especially targeted to first and second year post-secondary students as it provides them with the opportunity to join a new community and explore a career path in conservation biology. These students will be informed of the event through a direct ad mail piece.

Event Campaign

The Big Blue Photo Montage event is a community-based art event where a group of local artists will be working with the museum to piece together a photo montage of the iconic blue whale. The 12 ft long mural will feature pictures of the museum’s greatest collections and past exhibitions as well as creative photos of their visitors. To participate in the event, visitors will need to come to the museum with a copy of the booklet brochure (included in the ad mail package) and take a photo with it in front of their favourite exhibit. They will then need to submit this photo via email to the BBM events team for a chance to be included in the photo montage.

As a gift for visitors as well as an incentive for them to come to the museum, the BBM will be giving out two specially designed postcards. One of the postcards will be included in the ad mail package; in order to collect the second postcard, visitors will need to present their copy of the booklet brochure to one of museum staff members at the end of their visit. These postcards can be displayed at the back of the booklet brochure for safekeeping.

Design Notes

The red and cream colours found on the front page of the BBM website were used as the main colour palette for this project. The blue whale graphic is the primary image used to promote the event and is made up of random abstract shapes to mimic the style of a photo montage. The six colours used to categorize the museum’s six history collections were also incorporated into the graphic. The direct ad mail piece is a tangible connection to the BBM brand and its success rate can be determined by the number of visitor photo submissions as well as the number of postcards that were handed out.

Important note: Images of the museum (except for the photo of the blue whale skeleton) and its logos, including the icons for each history collection, were provided. Budget considerations were not required for this project.
